Set Overview

The Night Shift

Gem Pack Vol. 3 is the third release in the Simplified Chinese exclusive Gem Pack series, arriving in September 2025 with a nocturnal and shadow-type theme anchored by Gengar. Where Vol. 2 leaned into the broad appeal of Eeveelutions, Vol. 3 commits to a darker visual identity — deep purples, high contrast, ghost-type imagery — and the result is a set that feels cohesive in a way the series hadn't quite achieved before. Laid out together, the cards share a moody, night-time palette that gives Vol. 3 a genuine aesthetic personality. It's less about flash and more about atmosphere.

At 136 cards, Vol. 3 also marks a structural step up from the earlier volumes. The box format increases from 15 packs to 18 packs per box — a change that carried forward into Vol. 4 and represents a meaningful shift in how much product you're getting per box compared to Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. The series' signature all-holographic format remains — every card foiled, no non-holo filler — and the same symbol-based rarity system (● Common, ◆ Uncommon, ★ Rare, ★★ Double Rare, ★★★ Triple Rare) carries forward. But Vol. 3 introduces something new to the Gem Pack line: EX cards appear in the format for the first time, adding a layer of mechanical and collector significance that the series hadn't previously had.

Set Structure

The Foil Ladder and the 07 Question

The Gem Pack series builds its depth not through a massive roster of unique Pokémon, but through layered foil treatments applied to each featured line. Every Pokémon progresses through a defined ladder of finishes: Energy Holo, Poké Ball Holo, Glitter Foil (Stars), Prismatic Foil (Rotary), Master Ball Holo, Gem Pack Stamped, and finally the 07 position — the top of each line, where the premium card sits.

In Vol. 3, the 07 position is where the format shows its rough edges. Unlike later sets, the 07 slot isn't standardised as a full art across the board. Some Pokémon lines top out with a true full art at 07, while others receive a standard EX variant instead. The set list makes clear which lines get which treatment — it's not random — but as a design decision, it means the format doesn't consistently deliver the same level of payoff at the top of every ladder. Some lines peak higher than others, and that inconsistency becomes more visible when you're comparing Vol. 3's structure to the cleaner approach Vol. 4 would later take.

What Collectors Should Know

The Energy Problem

The more significant structural issue at ★★★ is Energy dilution. The triple-star tier in Vol. 3 includes Energy variants — meaning some of the highest-rarity pulls in the set aren't Pokémon at all. When triple-star slots are shared between full art Pokémon and holographic Energy cards, the effective concentration of premium character cards at the top of the rarity pool is thinner than the raw numbers suggest. For collectors chasing full arts specifically, this shapes how the set feels to complete — there are fewer Pokémon at ★★★ than the tier's size implies.

None of this makes Vol. 3 a bad set. The nocturnal theme is the strongest visual identity the series had produced to that point, and Gengar's presence across multiple rarity tiers gives the set a clear centre of gravity. The introduction of EX cards was a meaningful milestone, and the move to 18 packs per box from the earlier 15 gave collectors more to work with. But viewed honestly within the series arc, Vol. 3 is a set that got the aesthetics right while leaving structural questions — the inconsistent 07 treatment, the Energy dilution at ★★★ — for Vol. 4 to resolve. It's the set that showed the format's potential and its remaining rough edges in equal measure.
