Set Overview

The MEGA Era Begins

Mega Brave is one half of the dual launch that marks the beginning of the MEGA Series — the second major era of the Pokémon TCG's ninth generation. Released alongside Mega Symphonia on August 1, 2025, it reintroduces Mega Evolution to the card game for the first time since the XY era ended nearly a decade earlier. The return isn't cosmetic. Mega Evolution Pokémon ex now function as standard evolution stages rather than standalone cards, and they carry a significant new rule: three Prize cards on knockout, up from two for regular Pokémon ex. That risk-reward tension is central to how the MEGA Series plays.

The set is directly tied to Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the Gen 6 revival that brought Mega Evolution back to the mainline franchise. In a notable move, the TCG launched its Mega sets before the game itself released — collectors who opened Mega Brave in August 2025 were seeing these Mega forms in card art before they appeared on screen.

What Defines the Set

New Mechanics, New Rarities

Mega Brave introduces two firsts for the Pokémon TCG. The Mega Ultra Rare (MUR) is an entirely new rarity tier — gold-etched cards featuring unique illustrations that are distinct from their SAR counterparts. Where previous Ultra Rares reused existing artwork, MUR cards are original compositions designed specifically for this treatment. The set also debuts Full Art Super Rare prints of Item cards, a category that had never received the full art treatment before. Both introductions arrived as shared features across Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia, establishing them as defining characteristics of the MEGA era from day one.

Featured Mega Pokémon

Lucario Leads the Charge

Mega Lucario ex is the headline card and the face of the set. As one of the most popular Mega Evolutions from the original XY era, its return carries genuine collector weight — particularly in its MUR form, which sits at the top of the set's chase hierarchy. Alongside Lucario, the set features Mega Venusaur ex, Mega Absol ex, Mega Mawile ex, and Mega Camerupt ex. It's a Fighting and Grass-leaning lineup, giving Mega Brave a distinctly physical identity compared to its twin set's Psychic and Dragon focus.

The Trainer roster adds real depth. Wally, Lillie, Lt. Surge, and Acerola all appear with new Supporter cards — a cross-generational lineup that gives the secret rare pool substance beyond the Mega headliners. Lillie's Determination and Lt. Surge both received SAR prints, and both have held collector interest since release.

What Collectors Should Know

The Cards That Matter

The crown jewel is Mega Lucario ex MUR (#92) — a gold-etched card with original artwork that established the MUR rarity as something collectors immediately understood was different. Below that, the Mega Lucario ex SAR and Mega Venusaur ex SAR (#87) both carry strong appeal. On the Trainer side, Lillie's Determination SAR (#91) and Lt. Surge SAR (#90) round out a chase card pool that balances Pokémon and character appeal well. For a 92-card set, the ratio of genuinely desirable pulls is high.

Mega Brave's English equivalent is included in the Mega Evolution set, released September 26, 2025. For collectors who want the original Japanese printing — with its smaller set size, tighter pull structure, and the prestige of being the first MEGA era product — this is the version to hold.
